Dr. Dana Ionescu
Research Scientist,
ECN Fuel Cell Technology

A research scientist from Romania, Dana Ionescu works at the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands ECN in Petten. After having worked for an American company for four years, she faced then the need to get up to speed with Dutch as this is the working language at ECN.

"I followed PCI's 'Dutch for Foreigners' course," says Dana.

"While I entered the course at a very low level, right now 75% of my conversations at work are held in Dutch."

She has made such progress now that her boss refuses to talk to her in any other language but Dutch. Asked about the merits of the specific course itself, Dana enthuses: "I found the course very well-structured; and the fact that tuition was on a one-to-one basis and I could take lessons at my own pace and whenever I liked, greatly helped me to learn Dutch so much easier and faster."

Dana is also very appreciative of her teacher. "Throughout the course my teacher has shown a great understanding of my needs," she says.

"I must commend her for having me read and study articles specifically about my job that she had selected from various Dutch media. This way I could quickly familiarise myself with the technical language that I need in my job. And sometimes, at breaks, she would also bring me clippings of Dutch articles about my native country. Now surely this goes to show PCI very much takes care of people while learning another language."
